CAPTURED: GET OUT OF TOWN

Sometimes you have really bad days. Sometimes bad days happen a lot easier when your pregnancy hormones are raging and all technology is out to get you. ;) Friday was that type of day for me. I woke up feeling bleh-sad-weird-unmotived and as the day progressed little things kept building up and making it more and more BLEH.

Jon knew my day was not-so-hot and being the loving and sweet husband that he is, he surprised me by coming home early from work with my favorite drink from Sonic at hand. He's been so attentive and sweet during this pregnancy. It's been so wonderful to have him by my side, taking such great care of me. I love him SO freaking much!! We had talked about going out of town on Saturday, but in a spur of the moment decision, and after realizing it was much needed, we decided to take a late night drive to Greenville, SC, and stay in a hotel.

We spent the majority of the day on Saturday enjoy the downtown area. We went to the Holiday Indie Craft Parade, visited a few pop up shops and ate some delicious BBQ at a local restaurant. We had such a laid-back, restful time, it was exactly what I needed. It has seriously been an emotional roller-coaster of emotions during this third trimester! I am SO completely thankful for a mini trip away and for Jon. I couldn't have made it through the weekend in one piece without him. :)

HELLO FROM TEXAS!

Jenny and I are attending one of our last conferences for the year and we couldn't be happier that it's Texas Style Council! This is our first time in Austin and we are loving it so far. Can't wait to head out soon to the downtown area and get this conference started! We will be in great company this weekend and have the opportunity to meet so many amazing bloggers that we look up to, have worked on designs for and have connected with over the years. It's wonderful being part of this community AND getting to meet some of these amazing women in person.

We have a busy couple of days, so be sure to follow us on our blogs (Jenny's blog here) and keep up with our Instagram feeds! We'll be taking lots of pictures on @maiedae and @jennyhighsmith. :)

Yay! And if you are in Austin attending the conference please come say hi!! We would love to meet you and give you one of our special business cards with an amazing discount on our graphic design services. Happy weekend!

CAPTURED: NEW YORK CITY .02

Thursday was a LONG day. We started the day early getting ready for the conference. We took the subway to the Martha Stewart Omnimedia Center and were greeting by handfuls of swag, an incredibly beautiful space, and breakfast! We started mingling, doing crafts right away, and getting our minds prepped for a day of speakers, learning, and fun. Everyone was seriously dressed so cute. I'm not usually a fan of people who run into my photos, but this day was an exception. Everyone looked adorable and so vibrant. You could tell all of the ladies were thrilled to be there. :)

The lovely Grace of Design*Sponge kicked off the conference with a keynote presentation. There were several panel discussions, eye opening ideas, AND an appearance from Martha Stewart herself! I should have recorded the reaction of the audience. It was incredible. At the end of the conference, we celebrated with a cocktail/candy bar party on the rooftop. The view was amazing! We met so many new friends and had SO much fun. Jenny and I headed out shortly after that to grab dinner near our apartment. I also had my first taxi experience! Whooo! We got burgers, gelato, and coffee. We also managed to snap a few outfit photos. New York has the best backdrops.

CAPTURED: NEW YORK CITY .01

Jenny and I had such an amazing time in New York. Looking back, it was such a whirlwind. We arrived on Wednesday and got to our beautiful apartment. Janee, Maddie, Jenny, and I decided to go with a vacation rental in East Village and loved it. Everything was white and bright and it was a darling space. We had so much fun rooming with our new friends. :) After grabbing some much needed pizza from around the corner, we started getting ready for our sponsored dinner. Jenny and I went to a dinner sponsored by Bing and catered by Sunday Supers. It was located in a somewhat suspicious building, but as soon as we hiked several floors of stairs and walked through a long hallway, we were taken to an absolutely stunning space worthy of a spread in Kinfolk magazine. It was gorgeous, I couldn't get enough of the lighting and spent the first 15 minutes shooting photos.

PHOTOS FROM WEDNESDAY:

I have a lot more photos from our ALT Conference day on Thursday and our exploring on Friday! I'm planning to share the rest throughout the week. :)

HELLO NEW YORK!

Photo Via
Currently on a plane flying to the beautiful city of New York! One of my favorite things about working for Maiedae is our travel time and getting the chance to go to new places and meet new people. Tonight we are going to a fun dinner, Thursday we will be attending the ALT Summit conference all day, Friday we will be exploring New York, and Saturday we will be flying back home. We seriously have way too much to do and NOT enough time.

Jenny and I are rooming with two other amazing/inspirational blogging friends, Maddie and Janee. Instead of spending an insane amount of money on a hotel room, we decided to split an apartment/loft and stay in it together. We found an incredible space in a great location and saved so much more than we would have getting hotel rooms. I love being able to feel like I'm temporarily living somewhere. Can't wait to share photos with you! I'll also be taking plenty of photos via Instagram so be sure to follow me there, too! @maiedae

WHY GO TO CREATIVE CONFERENCES?

Since being in business together, Jenny and I have been able to travel and attend four different creative conferences. These have ranged from massive conferences like HOW Design to smaller, more intimate settings like The Makers Summit or Blogshop Video. I use the word "conference" loosely, because I'm also counting more intimate settings like workshops. We also have plans to attend three additional conferences this year, including the one we are flying to tomorrow, ALT Summit. :)

When starting our business, we realized that we didn't have a lot of overhead costs. We didn't need to rent out a studio, we had the equipment we needed and being graphic designers and bloggers doesn't incur very many costs, so we needed to develop a good game plan for our business budget that would be a good investment. The first conference we attended together was when Maiedae was VERY young and we were still working full-time with separate jobs. We got an opportunity to attend HOW in Chicago and went for it. HOW is a huge conference. There are thousands of people there and tons of vendors. It was a little overwhelming, but we loved the travel time and loved the experience. Since going full time, we've put more of our business finances towards attending "conferences" and have already been to a couple this year. The more we go, the more we realize the benefits of attending creative events. Now we make it a point to plan conferences throughout the year to attend and purposefully budget for them. Here are a couple of my favorite benefits for attending creative events:

Photo Via
1// Travel Time - I've never been the type of person to like a job that keeps me traveling every week. I LOVE being home and being with my husband. BUT I do love me some travel time! At this time, Maiedae hasn't really required us to travel, most of what we do currently can be done from anywhere with good Wifi. Being able to make travel plans with Jenny a couple times a year is the best. We have loved getting to see new places and being travel buddies together. We've made it a point to have an annual retreat for Maiedae and attend 2-4 conferences each year. This is just enough travel time that it isn't too crazy and thoroughly enjoyable. I also LOVE staying in hotels or rentals...like a lot!

2// People - Probably one of the biggest reasons we decided to regularly attend events throughout the year was to meet people. Through just the small amount of events we've attended, we've been able to meet people to collaborate on huge projects with, work for us on our team, make lifelong friends, develop creative connections, find clients, and be incredibly inspired by individuals who are making things happen in their lives. The caliber of people you meet at these types of events is incredible. Jenny and I always walk away overwhelmed and thrilled by the people we meet. I dare say that developing a successful business and brand has networking at its backbone. And with all of the social media we have, it's easy to stay connected to the new people you meet.

3// Learning - So not only do you get to travel and meet AMAZING people, but you also get to learn and be inspired! Conferences and workshops are the perfect place for amping up your "ideation" and soaking in lots of learning. I always leave with a notebook full of ideas and a fire under my behind in the creative department.

4// Growth - Through the combination of networking and learning, we've found that it has greatly helped our business grow. Many of the people who helped with and attended The Maiedae Mixer were people we met networking at events. A lot of new faces have later become clients of ours. Finding people to collaborate on projects with and make connections with has really enabled us to take things even further in our business and grow. This community of creatives is so supportive, encouraging and excited to be part of something. Putting yourself out there is a major step toward growing yourself as a brand and business.

So, the next obvious question is what conferences should you decide to attend? To be honest, we often hear about amazing conferences AFTER they've already happened. But we are sure to make note of them and keep an eye on registration for the following year. We also take a look at what conferences other creative women in our field are attending. There are so many amazing things out there that you're sure to find some that apply to you and fit your budget. Here is a list of a couple of our favorites, some we've attended, and some we hope to attend soon!

* ALT Summit (SLC, NY & SF)
* Texas Style Council
* The Makers Summit
* Blogshop & Blogshop Video - Workshops
* Influence Conference
* Circles Conference
* Camp Mighty

What are your thoughts on attending conferences and workshops? What are some of your favorites?

ASK THE WALLACES: VACATIONING ON A BUDGET

As you read this, Jon and I are in the mountains of Tennessee celebrating our 3-year anniversary with another couple! We decided to take a long weekend trip, rent a cabin, spend a day in Dollywood, and have a leisurely vacation time. Zach and Leah, who are also going with us, got married one day after Jon and me, so it's been fun to take mini vacations with them to celebrate our anniversaries together.

Something you may know if you've been reading my blog for awhile is that Jon and I have been working hard to pay off my student loans from college. Going to a private college can have its advantages and disadvantages, one of those being a giant tuition. We've been working on paying off our loans for the past 2.5 years and have been able to pay off 55% of our loans. We still have a little ways to go but are hoping to completely finish them off in 2014. It's been a long journey and we've definitely had to hold off on extra purchases, big vacations, saving to buy a home and fully furnishing our home. In the end, we know it will be SO worth the effort and time once these bad boys are done. And yes, we will be throwing a huge party to celebrate!

However, as we are both working full-time, we still need to make breaks and vacations a priority. We need time to get away from everything, put the electronics down and refresh. It's been so important for us and it's been so invigorating to get away and come back ready to go and refreshed. Over the past three years, Jon and I have come up with clever ways to get away on a budget and not break the bank for expensive vacations. Below are a couple of our tips:

1// Budgeting - We live off of a monthly budget that we try to keep as detailed as possible. This helps us understand where our money is going, when we've paid our bills, and how much "flex" money we have available. Each month we try to set aside a small amount of money into our vacation budget. If we know we have a vacation coming up, we try and slip in a little extra so that the money is fully available before our trip and will cover everything from our stay to gas money. A couple weeks before we leave for our trip I take our budget and split it up between gas money, food money, money we know we will be spending (on tickets etc.) and a little bit of extra-cushion money. This helps us be aware of how much we have to spend on the trip so we won't go overboard or get too caught up in that "I'm on vacation" mode that makes you spend more money than you have. ;) This has been great for us to make wise financial decisions while we are vacationing. We know we can splurge on one fancy dinner and we might eat at less expensive places throughout the rest of the time or even cook our own food. Budgeting has helped us save so much money and puts us in the right frame of mind for our trips.

2// VRBO - Have you heard of VRBO? It's a website were you can rent vacation rentals by owner and it's AMAZING. You can rent places all over the world and in almost any location. The website is easy to navigate and we've been able to find some amazing places to stay. I've used VRBO to rent 4 places now and I don't think I'll ever go back to staying in hotels if I can help it. The benefit is that more than likely you'll find something less expensive than a hotel. It's a great option to split with other friends! Most likely, it will include a full kitchen so you can cook for yourself and it really gives you that "at home" feel rather than feeling like you're a tourist. Jenny and I rented a beautiful loft in Savannah, GA, through VRBO right on Broughton Street with a full kitchen and it was less expensive then nearby hotel options. Jon and I are also currently staying in a beautiful, cozy cabin with a hot tub, pool table, and cozy beds that has an amazing view. Both places were under $150 per night. You can find great reviews for places on VRBO, see photos of the location and sometimes score a special discounted rate from the owner during the off season. I'm a huge fan and will forever be using vacation rentals from here on out.

3// Go with Friends - When we stay in a vacation rental, the idea of getting away to a nice place in and of its own feels like a vacation. We don't necessarily feel the need to go out and do a bunch of additional costly things. We love to bring games, movies, explore the outdoors, and go into town for a fancy dinner or trip to Dollywood. ;) Having friends go with you on vacation can not only make that type of vacationing so much more fun, but it also helps with cost. You can split the price of the place you are staying at, gas money, and chip in together to buy groceries. After everything is said and done a three night-four day stay, gas, food and extra costs will come out to under $450 total for an extended weekend vacation. Depending on your budget, you can make this more or less depending on where you choose to stay and being economically creative. ;)

4// Make it an Extended Weekend - As mentioned above, we usually like to stick with extended weekend vacationing. This saves us from using too many vacation days and sandwiching 1-2 vacation days on a weekend, or a holiday weekend really helps! If possible, look to vacation during off-season times. You'll most likely find way better rates and less crowds!

5// Cook Your Own Food - By using a vacation rental, we've been able to purchase groceries and make our own food during our trip. This definitely helps ease the budget rather than eating out for every meal. We usually bring food to prepare for breakfast and lunch and plan to go out to dinner OR just go out to one fancy place. It also saves money on snack foods throughout the day. When we go with another couple we usually meal plan beforehand so we have a list of all the meals we can make and plenty of beverages and snacks throughout our time. If you don't have access to a kitchen, I suggest bringing meal and snack items that don't have to be cooked to help save costs.

6// Roadtrips! - Going to a far away destination can be so much fun, but flight costs can sometimes be out of budget for your upcoming vacation. Whenever possible, we try to plan mini trips that we can drive to in under 8 hours. This not only gives us a great excuse to explore the Southeast, but it saves lots of money not having a buy a plane ticket. As well, if you are going with friends, road-trips can be SO much fun. If it's a really long road-trip, plan to make stops at fun locations to make the road-trip also feel like part of the vacation.

7// Staycations - Sometimes a get away is completely out of the question. Perhaps due to other financial responsibilities or timing. When we first got married, we would often take "Staycations". This meant that we would stay at home, rent fun movies, plan out of the ordinary activities and dates and be intentional to be on vacation while we were at home. This often requires you to set "Staycation" house rules like no work, electronics, and canceling some of your plans. This helps give you that "getaway" feeling. We still take mini Staycations here and there when needed but love when we are especially able to take a mini getaway.

I hope this was helpful advice!! AND I hope that you will enjoy this new series! Jon and I will be posting about marriage/relationship/things-we've-learned advice on a regular basis so if you have any particular questions or topics you would like us to cover, please feel free to share them in the comment section below! As well, if you have additional tips to add to vacation on a budget, please do share!

Hope you are having a wonderful week, friends!

TRAVEL BAG NECESSITIES

Lately I've gotten the opportunity to do a lot of traveling and still have a couple trips coming up before mid-February! While I get to travel some for my day job, I LOVE when I get the chance to do a little adventuring for Maiedae. Last weekend, Jenny and I went to California and coming up soon we will be road tripping to Greenville, SC, to attend The Makers Summit. :) One of the things I try to do before leaving home is clean out my travel bag and pack it with all of my travel "must-haves" so I'm fully prepared for my adventure. ;)

1// Colorful Pens - Flights are usually my greatest brainstorming time. I love having a huge stock of my favorite pens on me during travel so I can take time to record ideas, make plans, and develop new projects.

2// Warby Parker Sunglasses - Sometimes traveling means long hours and early mornings. I love being able to put together a "chic" look with sunglasses and be prepared for the sunniest of days. :)

3// Baby Lips - My mom got me the peach flavored Baby Lips for Christmas. Sometimes wearing lipstick too much can make my lips feel chapped. I love this smooth balm and delicious smell. It also has just a little shimmer which is perfect for an early morning on-the-go look.

4// Wacom Tablet - For on the road design projects.

5// Utterly Smooth Hand Lotion - My skin tends to get dry during travel. I love this lotion because its scent is very slight and it moisturizes so well! Since it has such a faint smell, it doesn't bother others sitting around you, which is always a plus.

6// Business Card Holder - I try to network wherever I go, making sure to have a stack of business cards is a must.

7// Hair Ties - I love these simple and pretty hair ties that add a little shine to my curly bun.

8// Kelly Moore Bag - I LOVE this bag. I've had it for a little over a year now and I use it nearly everyday. It's perfect for travel and as a daily work bag. I can fit my computer, camera, wallet, charger and lots of little things in this bag. It's durable and well organized on the inside.

9// iPhone & Recover Case - When it's not as convenient to snap pictures with my SLR, I love being able to have my phone and record memories along the way.

10// Moleskine - I never go anywhere without my journal. I keep all of my lists, ideas, projects, goals and plans in this book.

Happy weekend, friends!

BLOGSHOP VIDEO

Jenny and I got the opportunity to attend Blogshop Video during our trip to California last weekend. We spent the entire day Monday learning how to shoot and edit video with the lovely Blogshop ladies; Bri and Angela. Incorporating video into our business and blogs was a huge goal for us this year and this was one of the first steps towards making that a reality.

I took a narrative video production class in college and even tried my hand at final cut pro, but I never really got into the video making mindset. To me, it always seemed like a huge production, with tons of planning time, storyboarding and editing in order to produce something remotely of any good quality. After not continuing my learning of video production I slowly lost the skill and didn't know where to even begin once Jenny and I started discussing the potential of incorporating video into our blogs. We even spent a whole Saturday recording on my Macbook to try and put something together, but the quality was poor and we just weren't happy with the final result.

In comes Blogshop Video. If you are addicted to Photoshop like I am, you might be aware that the new Photoshop CS6 includes video editing capabilities. WHAT?! I was so excited too! I usually spend up to 25 hours or more every week in Photoshop with design work so I'm very familiar with the program and how to make it do what I want. When I found out I could apply that knowledge to editing videos I was SOLD. The workshop was about eight hours long, it included tips and tricks on editing video in Photoshop, examples of beautifully shot videos around the web, helpful exercises along the way, tips on lighting and shooting footage and time to shoot our own mini videos with a full table of props and a beautiful location. It was such an exciting class, I found myself grabbing Jenny a couple times and shaking her with excitement or giving her that "I have a great idea" look. ;)

We both left feeling completely empowered to shot and edit videos in Photoshop. We are so excited about turning some of our visions and ideas for 2013 into a tangible reality. I LOVED taking this class, and would very highly reccomend it to anyone interested in video.

We ended up having a little bit of a camera issues with our SLR so we hurried and shot about 10 minutes worth of footage in order to put something together for our class project. Below is the video Jenny put together. I love how she combined the fun music and footage!

I can't wait to start putting more videos together! I love how something as simple as a 1 minute video can say so much! Aside from producing videos to incorporated in my post series I'm planning on putting together more video "scrapbooks" to capture life and fun happenings.

I'm so glad I got to share my experience with you! Be sure to check out the Blogshop website to see dates and locations for their upcoming workshops! Have a wonderful weekend!

CAPTURED: CALIFORNIA ADVENTURES

Hello!! I took a little blogging break to travel across the country and visit sunny California! Jenny and I have been planning this trip for a couple months and we were so excited to leave Friday morning and spend an extended weekend across the country. This trip was a "kill two birds with one stone" trip for us. We really wanted to visit one of our closest friends, Anica, while she is attended school in Pasadena and we also wanted to turn this into a mini business trip and attend Blogshop video so we could gain some new and excited knowledge for Maiedae!

On Friday, we spent most of the day settling in. We arrived around noon, grabbed a late lunch at In and Out and toured around Anica's school. This was Jenny's first time in CA, so she loved seeing the sights and the palm trees that were as tall as some four story buildings. ;) Saturday was spent touring around the city. We went out to eat, went on the WB Studios tour (so awesome), got to see the set of The Ellen show, took pictures at the Hollywood sign, ate a delicious dinner in Burbank, and went to bed early for a full day of Disney on Sunday! I love Disney. So much! We got there right after it opened and stayed for nearly twelve hours. We rode everything we hoped to, got to take pictures with some of our favorite characters and ate a fancy dinner in the park. It was a blast. Our favorite ride was definitely Space Mountain. This was the first ride we went on and all three of us were laughing hysterically and screaming the entire time.

Monday was a full day of workshop goodness by Bri and Angela. After interning with them in Atlanta for Blogshop, Jenny and I decided to take their video class to learn the ins and outs of shooting and editing. It was a fantastic class that I highly recommend it. I'll be sharing more about what I learned in an upcoming post!

The next morning, Jenny and I had a short coffee date with Anica and then caught our plane back to Atlanta. It was a fantastic trip, and I can't wait until we get to got on our next trip for Maiedae. Matter of fact, we will be leaving on February 1st to attend The Makers Summit in Greenville, SC! So ready for some awesome inspiration and craft party goodness with the ladies from Indie Craft Parade. Please let me know if you are coming! I'd love to connect up with you!

And there you have it! A little brief wrap-up of our trip. Be on the lookout for more details on Blogshop and lots of great posts for the rest of the month!
