LIVING ROOM PROGRESS

In my last living room progress post, I shared our fireplace makeover with you! That labor-of-love project made such a huge difference in the space. From the beginning, this room has been deemed the most "dingy" room in the house and needed the most paint work BUT it was also the room with the most character. Although we knew we had a lot to do, and still have a lot left! Jon and I are SO excited to see this room complete. It already feels SO different from when we first moved in!

So, our next major project for this room after the fireplace was to paint ALL of the wood trim, doors and windows. We also wanted to replace door knobs, light switches and outlet plates since we had a variety of gold, black, brown and beige going on before. ;) Not cute.

Since having a baby makes projects a little more tricky to knock out in a few full days, we spread this project over a couple weekends. Here is a little list of what we did to the space:

* Caulk and spackle everything. There were so many cracks between the walls, trim and windows, it made everything look so sloppy. After spending almost a day working on this it made a huge difference!

* Prime, prime, prime! We had to do two coats of primer on all of the trim, with very careful attention to the wall of windows. We used Kilz Primer and it worked really well! This is the same primer we used for the fireplace.

* After spending a lot of time priming, we put two coats of semi-gloss bright white paint over all of the trim, windows, and doors. We decided to do two coats just to make sure we got everything and that there would be absolutely no wood showing through. We also figured that if we were going to take on this major project that we would do our best to do it right! ;)

* And finally, we prepped everything and painted the walls a beautiful grey color to really make that trim pop. We were very much done with the dingy green tone that was in there previously.

We are SO pleased with the final results! We still have a lot of work to do in this space, but the major project is done! We have so many excited plans for our home this year and I can hardly wait to share them with you. :)

LEFT TO DO IN THE LIVING ROOM
* Replace the odd patch of carpet with something new, and get rid of the scary transition strip, or "toe ripper" as I like to call it.
* Paint the built-in with a fresh coat of white paint and possibly paint the backing a different color.
* Purchase some furniture pieces and get this room decorated!
* Mount TV.
* Hang some beautiful pictures.
* Replace the "boob" light on the ceiling beam.

STUDIO INSPIRATION

Now that things are settling in a little with Soren, Jon and I have been taking the time here and there to make a little bit of progress on our home. We have a lot of painting planned and some exciting big projects for this year! Currently, I've been working little by little on decorating my studio space. I painted it before having Soren and am not crazy about the color so I'll be re-painting it and getting everything together to create a functional space!

Here are a few inspiration photos of what I'm thinking for the studio!

1// Originally, I painted the studio a super light mint color. After taking the time to look at it for a while and "feel it out", I decided it wasn't the right color for the space and for the lighting. Instead I'll be pulling out our cans of black chalkboard paint and painting the top half black and leaving the bottom white. I think it will give it a really interesting look and I love the idea of being able to draw on the walls. :) I'm thinking about having Jenny write out Maiedae in her fancy handwriting. :) I have a wooden desk, so I like how this photo shows what the two could look like together.

2// I have plans for lots of gold accessories. Target was having a sale on a lot of their home pieces so I snagged some really beautiful gold desk accents!

3// Since we have hardwood floor throughout, I wanted to find a really great plush rug to put in the space. I would love a rug that would be great for Soren to play on and cozy up to. It's hard finding a beautiful neutral rug that doesn't shed, stays looking great, and is kid-friendly...your suggestions are welcome! :)

4// I love a well organized space with lots of storage and a place for everything! Outside of a desk, I'm working on figuring out what type of storage I need and what would look best in the space.

PROJECT HOME: NURSERY REVEAL!

I'm SO excited to finally be revealing Soren's nursery! If you've been following along, we shared our nursery inspiration board here, a fun dresser DIY and before photos here, and our beautiful star feature wall here! Just to give you a quick recap, we decided to go with a "Star Wars" themed nursery, however, we wanted to make it more subtle and bright. It was a lot of fun finding unique artwork and pieces to create the theme but also work towards making it feel not over-done. We LOVE how everything turned out and now all we need is a baby!! 13 days away from due date! 

Jon already had the Star Wars lego collection, that he had been working on for a couple years, so we decided to display some of the best ones in the nursery. We also added in a couple of stuffed animals and pieces from our childhood to include in Soren's space. It's amazing how different this room looks from when we first started. It feels so bright and cheery now, it's probably my favorite room in the house. :)

PROJECT HOME: DINING ROOM PROGRESS

I mentioned quite a few weeks ago that we made some fun layout decisions for our main floor. Instead of keeping two sitting rooms and a formal dining room, we decided to turn our "den" into the main and only sitting room, turn our formal dining room into my studio and turn our living room into our dining room! Sound confusing enough? Check out this post for a quick visual of what I mean. :)

Two weekends ago, Jon and I got a burst of energy and decided to finally paint over the beige walls in the new studio and dining room and start the steps to bringing these spaces to life. One of the most helpful strategies we've done in our home is that whenever we decide to paint a room, we also replace all outlets, switches, cover plates, vents and doorknobs in order to give the space a completely fresh look. We love saying goodbye to mix-matched plates, brass vent covers and doorknobs from the 70's that don't work anymore! -- Each time we do this it completely transforms the space and takes out the "grunge" feeling from living in an older home and really brings out the charm! You can see from the photos below how dark and grungy this space felt before. The first photo is from the original house listing when we bought it and the remaining are from right before we got to prepping and painting. :)

For the dining space, we decided we wanted to really create a beautiful central entertainment room that would be suitable for hosting a large dinner and friends. We also decided that since most of our vision for the main floor includes a lot of neutrals that we should go ahead and take the plunge at embracing color and really make this room a statement! -- That we did! I brought home a huge stack of paint samples from Lowe's, we taped them on the wall, and took about 2-3 days to decide what color was best. Even then, last minute we changed our minds and went with this super striking Emerald color from Pantone. Emerald was 2013's color of the year, by the way! This color is surprising and refreshing. I was super nervous about it beforehand but after seeing it on the walls during the day and during the night, I fell in love. It's gorgeous and is SO fun. I can't wait to really get my hands on this room and get it furnished!

My vision is to have a massive bright white table, metal chairs, some funky faux hide rugs, a beautiful gallery wall AND as a project for down the road, we want to do a huge built in bar area complete with a fridge, glassware display and all the fixings for cocktails, mocktails, coffee, soda, and cocoa. Jon and I have definitely spent a fair share of time in this room imagining the space and we can't wait to see some of these projects begin! But first, we're just focusing on the tables!!

Also, just as a fun and quick side note, as you may notice in these pictures we've strung bulb lights from the ceiling. These were actually left-over lights from our wedding in 2010, originally purchased at Target. There currently isn't any electrical wiring done in this room so to add some pizazz and light, we went with an "outdoor restaurant" look by swaging the lights. It makes the room look so beautiful at night! -- It's also SUPER easy! We used screw in hooks to hold the lights in place and just made sure to make them tight so no one would bump their head on them or get strangled! Twinkle lights do wonders!

PROJECT HOME: FIREPLACE MAKEOVER

One of the big projects we really wanted to accomplish soon after moving into our home was giving the fireplace a little make-over. This is one of our favorite rooms in the house. It has an amazing amount of windows and we loved that the fireplace took up a huge portion of the wall. Our vision for this room is a bright and cozy place to host friends, watch movies, and have great conversations. There are a lot of dated features about this room, but I love the bones and its character. We have a lot of plans to really update this space and make it our own. First project?? The fireplace! We knew this would make an immediate impact on the space and that we could build around it afterward. Here is a before picture of the living room and fireplace that was used as one of the listing photos:

How We Updated Our Fireplace:

1// Hardware - We took off all of the old hardware on the fireplace. This included the brass cover and yellow-ish sconces. We also made sure to remove any nails and hooks from the brick.

2// Clean - We spent about an hour or so vacuuming the heck out of the fireplace before painting it. One tricky thing about painting fireplaces is that you can tend to have grease spots that will show through the paint as yellowy patches. Right around where the fire will be I might suggest taking some soap and water to the brick to break up any grease. We didn't paint the inside part of the fireplace, but if you do, you'll want to super clean and scrub that space before painting. You also won't be able to use it as a "fireplace" if you paint that area, unless the paint is specifically created for a fireplace and heated environments. 

3// Prep - We used blue masking tape to prep the areas around the fireplace. Since we are planning to also paint the trim and rest of the room we didn't mind if it wasn't perfect but we especially wanted to protect the floors and the wood mantel. We used trash bags to protect the mantel which I would suggest because paint ended up getting everywhere!

4// Prime! - This is a SUPER important step. Since brick is SO porous, it will take a lot of paint. Having an amazing coat of primer on your fireplace will make the final paint job go on smoothly and beautifully. Lets be real, priming this bad boy was a labor of love and took many, many hours. My suggestion would be to spread this project over two days. It took me nearly 6 hours to do one coat of primer and completely cover the entire fireplace. We used an entire gallon of Kilz paint primer for one coat. Kilz is AMAZING. Even though it took a really long time to cover everything, we only needed one coat of this stuff. Again, for this fireplace size, it took an entire gallon. I also went over a few grease patches a couple times to get rid of any yellow showing through the primer. So, onto the process...first I took a roller and did a basic cover over the top of the bricks with the primer. The roller brush didn't cover much because the grout on our fireplace is a little deep so it only got the fronts of the brick. Make sure you pick up a roller brush that's meant for a more porous surface. Then I took a brush and worked on filling in as much of the grout as possible. Because paint brushes are a little large, there were still some spaces and pores I couldn't quite get to. After a lot of time with the brush, I moved onto a small paint brush that you would use for painting canvas and art projects. This really took a lot of time because I wanted to get into every nook and cranny and make sure I did a complete cover with the primer. I would highly recommend watching a show while doing this! It makes the whole process a lot more enjoyable. ;) But take your time, make sure you do a full coverage of primer. It will be totally worth it if you do! 

5// Paint - After doing one, complete coat of primer and using an entire gallon of paint, we let the space dry. Once dried, we used a Valspar semi-gloss paint & primer in bright white. The semi-gloss was perfect and really added a beautiful shine to the fireplace. It also made the fireplace feel smooth and clean. We love how it looks in person! Since we worked so hard on the primer coat, it only took one easy coat of paint to finish off the fireplace. Again, we used the roller first and then used a larger paint brush to finish up the rest. It only took about an hour to do the final paint portion of the fireplace. 

And you're done!! It was definitely a time consuming project but it made a huge impact in our space and really updated the look. We also decided to update the lighting and Jon picked out these lantern style sconces at Lowe's which look beautiful up against the white. I'm still trying to figure out if I want to leave the mantel wood or paint it white...or black...I can't decide quite yet. I might do the rest of the room first and then decide. ;)

We are planning to paint all of the wood trim white and paint the walls a really beautiful light blue color to make all of the white really pop! I can't wait to see how this room progresses over time! 

PROJECT HOME: A CHANGE IN PLANS

As you can see from the main floor layout above, we have essentially two sitting areas in the house. "The Den" which has a lot of beautiful natural lighting and a fireplace and the "Living Room" that has a window facing the front of the house. Next to the kitchen is the current dining room. SO I have been thinking a lot about the layout of our main floor and trying to think of creative ways to make the space work and be functional for our lifestyle. There is a couple things we knew we wanted:

* A large, cozy sitting area to host friends and family. This room could possibly have a media area but we aren't set on having a TV on the main floor.
* A studio space for me to work, shoot videos, take photographs and have a comfortable desk area to work at. This needed to be on the main floor so that when we have Soren I can essentially live on the main floor to take care of him, work, do chores and be present on the main area of the home.
* Lastly, we really wanted a great dining space to host dinners. When it's just Jon and I we love eating at the bar in the kitchen or taking it down to the movie room to catch up on our favorite shows. Once our family grows I know we will want to make family dinners an important part of our lives and we love hosting friends for dinners, so a great dining room would really be utilized.

The idea of having both a "Den" and "Living Room" just isn't a practical use of space for us. We wouldn't really use two sitting areas at this time and I would personally love to just put a lot of efforts and design into one sitting space instead of two. :) SO with that said, here is an update with our new main floor layout.

The Den will become our main hosting/sitting area. The living room will become our "Grand Dining Hall" and our current dining room will become my studio! I'm so excited about this change because it fits our family so well and can easily be changed in the future if we decide we need to utilize the space differently. We are REALLY excited about the "Grand Dining Hall" as we like to call it. We're planning to put a table in this space that seats 14 people. We'll probably do this by purchasing 2-3 of the same table and putting them in a row. This will make it easier to utilize the tables in different ways. This is also the room I'd really like to paint a fun color and make a really awesome beverage area! I'm excited to see this floor really come to life.

PROJECT HOME: NURSERY PROGRESS REPORT

We honestly haven't made very much headway in the nursery. We are however, planning on ordering the crib and getting that built soon! Hopefully we'll have things 80% complete by the end of the month. I'm still trying to decide on things like what type of chair to put in the room (suggestions are welcome!).

One thing we have worked on is the feature wall. We wanted to use these beautiful stars from Walls Need Love as a fun accent to the room. Since we decided to paint the walls grey, we thought a subtle silver would be a neat look without too much contrast. At first, I was thinking about approaching it with a very simple look including rows of stars but Jon suggested we do something a little less patterned and with more of a starburst look. Thus, the starburst wall! I think we might work on making it a little less symmetrical and adding in more stars.

It looks a little bare right now, but we are planning to put a chair in this corner. I'm also thinking about hanging glass star lanterns, lights or something interesting in that corner to break-up the line where the walls meet in order to create a cozy, well-lit space for feeding and reading time. :)

PROJECT HOME: TIPS FROM AN OVERWHELMED NESTER

While moving into a new place can be SO exciting, one thing to remember is that it isn't always easy to "have everything together" right away. It's easy to get discouraged after the high of moving, pinning like a mad-woman, and seeing other peoples' homes come together so nicely. I've often found myself loosing my umph to continue nesting because of budgeting restrictions, time, and lack of energy.

When Jon and I moved into our house, we significantly up-sized from our condo in Atlanta. We hardly had enough furniture to fill the condo, so when we moved into the house we found ourselves with a lot of empty rooms. While that's OK and to be expected, it can be easy to just want all of the pieces to already be together and have an endless budget to execute your ideas immediately. But let's face the truth, people: sometimes we are blessed with hand-me-down furniture and amazing finds from second-hand shops...and sometimes we are not. Buying new furniture is EXPENSIVE! You can definitely find great prices, but if you are wanting to invest in great pieces, it takes time.

After buying a home, a lot of people find themselves in a slight money flow issue, add a baby on the way to that and you're looking at tightening up your budget on all sides to allow room for home stuff and baby stuff. I've often found myself bursting with ideas and excitement over decorating our home, but more often find my energy can't keep up with my mind and neither can my budget. ;) So here's the thing to realize. It's OK to take time nesting your home. Don't compare your home to other homes on Pinterest, use it for ideas but don't feel discouraged and bummed that your space doesn't look like that right now. Some people are NOT naturally gifted at decorating, I'm one of those people, so it's OK to ask for help and advice and study the pages of decorating books in order to learn. Your home is about the people, the memories, and the heart. It's not all about the decor. Not everyone has a massive home budget, so it's OK if it takes you time to nest. Enjoy the process and the progress! Here are a couple of additional tips for enjoying the process:

1// Do Stick with a Budget - Even though it can be tempting at times to go overboard and over-spend, be OK with taking your time and remaining within your means/budget. This process can also help you really take your time picking out items you love rather than settling quickly.

2// Beware of Pinterest - Pinterest is an incredible inspiration space, but don't let it put you in a funk or make you feel like you're constantly comparing your space to spaces on Pinterest. "Comparison is the thief of Joy." Revel in your space and make it yours. :)

3// Pace Yourself - It's easy to want to get every room done all at once, but that can be overwhelming. I've often found it helpful to think about one room at a time or make a list of priority projects and stay focused. This has really helped me prioritize spaces and projects and makes approaching home decorating less overwhelming.

4// It's OK to Ask for Help - Remember, not everyone is gifted in decorating and being full of grand ideas. If you need suggestions or assistance, ask a friend who's good at decorating to give you some advice. Decorating books are also super helpful! If you need help with projects, put together a project day and ask friends/family to lend a hand. :)

PROJECT HOME: NURSERY INSPIRATION

After finding out we were pregnant, I went back and forth a ton on thoughts about the nursery and what I wanted it to look like. As time went by, I could never get a clear picture in my mind of the direction. At our 20 week appointment, after finding out we were having a baby boy, Jon and I figured out exactly what we wanted to do with the nursery. If you would have asked me during the first months of pregnancy what I wanted to do, I would have said that I didn't want it to feel themed at all and I was pretty set on it. However, that all changed and now we are going in a themed direction with a very geek lovin' theme. ;)

Our nursery theme is Star Wars! Now we aren't taking the fan-boy approach to Star Wars by any means. We don't want it to feel commercial or expected so we are taking a much more subtle approach to the idea and making it very classy. We want people to walk in, look around and then understand the theme, not be overwhelmed with it immediately! PROJECT HOME: MASTER BEDROOM PROGRESS

As mentioned, one of the rooms we've really been wanting to focus on in the house is the master bedroom. Since being married we've always treated the master as the least important room and usually put all of our focus on the main rooms. Since realizing next year was going to be a huge time of change for us as we welcome Soren to our home, we made sure to make the master a priority. We wanted a place that would be functional, peaceful, and a cozy getaway. We did some budgeting and realized we weren't going to be able to get our "dream" furniture, so we figured out a way to make do with what we have, make some affordable purchases, and put something together that fits our needs. :)

As you can see in the before and progress photos, just a little bit of white paint really made this room come to life and brightened up the entire space. Especially after a good cleaning and doing a few little things like replacing all of the outlets and doorknobs. For awhile the only thing we had in the room was a bed and we realized quickly that some dressers and nightstands would be a great investment into making this space functional and getting the rest of our clothes out of the boxes!

We are loving this space so far. It feels simple, bright, and cozy. It fits our needs and will be a great space to bring our baby home to. We have a list of a couple more things we might like to get done before February. In the future, we'd really like to invest in some furniture pieces and have been keeping a close eye on our dream bed-frame from Restoration Hardware. The great thing about the purchases we did make is that they can easily be used in a guest room or kids room. The unfinished wood would allow us to paint them, replace hardware, and make them work with almost any room in our home. :)

Just to give you a little more information about the dressers and nightstands purchase, we picked these pieces up from IKEA. They took a while to build but are overall great quality pieces for their price tags. I've seen a lot of amazing IKEA hacks on these pieces on Pinterest (for example) and would highly recommend them if you're looking for some affordable furniture.

PROJECT HOME: SOREN'S NURSERY PROGRESS

It's been really fun to have a nursery room in the house and start preparing for little Soren's arrival. This room is located near our bedroom, see floor layout here, and was originally painted a very dingy beige. The yellow lighting didn't help either and the room as a whole often felt very dark and not the bright, clean feeling we were going for. As well, this silver dresser has certainly been through a lot, too. I picked this piece up at a thrift store for $40. It was originally painted white and had brassy hardware on it. My dad and I painted it silver, replaced the hardware and it became the dresser Jon and I used soon after we married. Check out this old before and after post I found in the archives. ;) We knew we wanted to use this piece in the nursery and make it into a dresser/changing station combination but really wanted it to pop and be a statement piece in the room.

A few weeks ago Jon and I spent a day cleaning, re-painting the room, and giving the dresser a makeover. We were SO happy with how the colors turned out and how the room looks so transformed only after a few coats of paint. :)

We've already got our color scheme and theme in mind for his nursery and I can't wait to show you! I think it's a really clever approach to an old beloved theme for geekery/nerdery everywhere. ;) Can you guess what it might be?

Paint colors & hardware: For the grey on the walls we used the brand Glidden in Pebble Grey in a matte finish. For the bright blue paint on the dresser we used Behr Ultra in Sea Life in a semi-gloss. Hardware is from Home Depot.

PROJECT HOME: LITTLE UPDATES

We've been working on lots of projects at home since moving in, from installing new doors to ripping out old staples from the carpeting. It's been a lot of work! We haven't had a lot of time to really get into the decorating and fancying up of our home since we're mainly focused on function at this point. We have a long list of to-do's before Soren comes and we're hoping to make a good dent in it!

Rooms and projects we'd like to finish before baby gets here:
* master
* nursery
* guest room
* closet space
* finish main stairs
* finish unpacking all boxes
* paint den
* paint dining room

The upstairs is our biggest focus at this point since we want a cozy master that will work well for us when the baby arrives. We would also like to have the nursery complete AND a good place for family and friends to stay comfortably. Lots to do!!

Here are a few "before's" and "progress" photos from our work around the house so far. :)

Kitchen: I've got a lot of exciting plans for the kitchen! One of the first major projects we want to take on is replacing the linoleum flooring. In the meantime, we needed to make an appliance purchase. We thought the dishwasher would work well for us moving in and then started to realize it wasn't working correctly and stinking! Since we want to make our appliances all stainless steal at some point, we decided to go ahead and replace the dishwasher. We are loving this Whirlpool purchase, and all of our dishes are SO clean! Hooray!

Sunroom: When we first moved in, our sunroom was our tools-and-cleaning-supply-storage space. We wanted a great place for the cats to roam so we decided to put in a door that still lets in the light. We cleaned up the space, put in a new door and purchased hardware that we eventually want to be throughout the interior of the home. We just need to finish the door and give it some good coats of paint! -- We've also got some exciting plans for the sunroom. I'm thinking LOTS of hanging plants and some hammocks??

Laundry Room: I've been having dreams of having a clean and fancy laundry room space. For now, we are focused on just keeping it clean and organizing everything! The washer and dryer were two of our first purchases. We've done some major cleaning and a little organizing. -- We have plans to replace flooring, do some tile work, paint, and add in some great storage. I'm also researching clever laundry room sink ideas to replace the one we have.

Master Bedroom: This is one of the rooms we've put the most work into since moving into the house. We did some major cleaning, priming and painting in this space. We also replaced all of the outlets and doorknobs. I think there was a total of 7 different types of outlet plates throughout the room and most of the doorknobs didn't even work correctly. We're planning to change all outlets and doorknobs throughout the house one room at a time. :) I'm also loving this beautiful bright white we picked for the room color. The blue before wasn't my favorite and you could see where the owner had also painted beige, black, and red in certain places. Yikes! It needed several coats of primer and one good coat of this lovely white. We plan to warm up the space with lots of faux fur and wood pieces.

Main Stairs: Originally we planned to just replace the carpet on the stairs with something new, but after taking the old carpet up we realized how beautiful the stairs are and we were happy to see the condition of the wood was great! We called our carpet guy and canceled the order. Jon and I are working on repairing the stairs currently. We need to finish pulling out all of the staples, fill the holes, paint the white part and revitalize the wood.
